Chapter 2

OUR HOPE

You have heard the old saying, “I have good news and bad news.”  Well, in the last chapter, I shared with you the bad news.  That is, our sin separates us from God and that it will keep us forever out of Heaven.  Why is this so important to understand?  Without the knowledge of our sin and how God feels about it, there would be no repentance in our hearts.  Without repentance, there is no reason to seek forgiveness.  If there is no forgiveness, there is no salvation from our sin and no home in Heaven.  Repentance means as a little girl put it, “Being so sorry for your sin that you never want to do it again.”

Heaven is a pure place for God is holy, sin can therefore never enter in.  If the story ended there, we would have no hope.  God did not leave us without hope.  As we read in the last lesson, the wages of sin is death.  Romans 6:23.  If we died for our own sin in order to pay the price, we would be lost forever.  Again, we would have no hope.  The only way our sin could be paid for and yet we be saved, is for someone else to pay the price.  But who could qualify to pay our price?  If all have sinned, each would have his or her own sin price to be paid, therefore could not die for someone else.  The sacrifice had to be made by someone who was without sin.  The only way was for God to send his own son, Jesus Christ, to die in our place.

1.    According to Romans 5:8, why would God send His Son to die for us?

            a.

2.    We have all seen a 3 leaf clover. It is a leaf with 3 parts yet is still one leaf.  God is also divided into 3 parts called the Trinity. He is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. .  Though he is three persons, yet he is one.  It is not so important that we understand how this is.  It is important that we understand what each one does..  God the Father is the one that all shall stand before on judgment day.  Jesus, or God the Son, came to die for our sins.  The first job of the Holy Spirit is to convict us of our sin. .  This is that uncomfortable feeling you got when you realized that you had sinned against God.  The second thing he does, is to point us to Jesus who can take away our sin so that when we stand before the Father, we will be found not guilty because Jesus had already paid our price.  According to I John 1:9, a. what are we to do to get rid of our sin, and then b.  what two things will God do?

        a.

       b.

3.    To be justified means that because we have been forgiven, God looks upon us  just as if we have never sinned.  This is our hope and our joy.  Grace means, unmerited favor.   In other words, we are justified because of God’s love, even though we do not deserve it.   According to Romans 3:24 ,  what did Jesus do in order for us to be justified?

        a.

4.    To be redeemed, is to be bought back.  What did it cost Jesus to buy us back?       I Peter 1:18-19

        a.

5.    Even though a gift is purchases for you, it is not truly yours until you receive it. Since our salvation is a gift from God that we receive through forgiveness, what must we do or have in order to receive it?  Ephesians 2:8-9.

        a.

6.    What is another word for Faith?  Acts 16:31

        a.

7.    How do we receive or increase our faith?  Romans 10:17

        a.

8.    In order to establish a good relationship with a person, there must be trust.  This is especially true in marriage.  A husband and wife must have faith or trust in each other and be secure in each others love. When that trust is gone, the relationship deteriorates.  Since the Lord will never betray your trust, why is it so important to have faith or trust in God?  Hebrews 11:6.

        a.

9.    According to that verse, what does God do for those who believe and seek him?

        a.

10.    As a new Christian, it is very important to be with other Christians who love the Lord.  For this reason, it is essential that you attend a church where it is taught that you must receive Jesus as your Savior. We all need encouragement, therefore, what does Hebrews10:24-25 say we should do when we come together with other Christians?

        a.

11.    You have now prayed and asked Jesus to forgive you of your sin.  According to Revelations 3:20 ,  what did Jesus do?

        a.

12.    Sin and transgression means the same thing.  According to Psalm 103:12, what has the Lord done with our sin?

        a.
